Separating Iron and Sulphur from Different States

Question

Iron is a metal and sulphur is a non-metal. Explain why it is easier to separate Iron from a mixture of iron and sulphur than from a compound of iron and sulphur.

Answer

Iron is magnetic while sulphur is non-magnetic. Hence Iron can be attracted using a magnet. In the compound, the two elements are chemically combined forming a new substance Iron (II) sulphide. Compound are not easily separated by physical means.
