Fractional Distillation of Liquid Air

Question

The fractional distillation of liquid air usually produces nitrogen and oxygen as the major products. Describe how nitrogen gas is obtained from air (N2= -196°C, O2=-183°C)

Answer

(i) Remove dust particles
(ii) Remove carbon (IV) oxide
(iii) Cool to -25°C to remove water vapour.
(iv) Expand to -200°C pressure is 200 atm.
(v) Carry out fractional distillation N2 distils first -196°C followed by oxygen at -183°C
