Effect of Heating Sulphur

Question

When a solid sample of sulphur is heated in a test tube, it changes into a liquid which flows easily; on further heating the liquid darkens and does not flow easily. Explain these observations.

Answer

When sulphur is heated, initially the weak van der waal forces joining the S8 rings are broken resulting a liquid which flows easily. Further heating breaks the covalent bonds in S8 rings resulting to long chain which entangles resulting a dark liquid which does not flow easily.
