Adjectives: Introduction

- An adjective is a word that talks more about a noun.
- An adjective can also be defined as a word that modifies or describes a noun.

Examples of Adjectives in Sentences

1. Driving a car is faster than riding a bicycle

Order of Adjectives

- More than one adjectives can be used in a sentence to describe a noun.
- However, they most follow a specific order to be grammatically correct.

The order of adjectives followed is:
1. Opinion - fast, ugly, smart, lazy.
2. Size - small, huge, large, big
3. Age - young, old, elderly, youthful, used, teenage, second-hand.
4. Shape - square, rounded, circular, triangular, shapeless, oval.
5. Colour - yellow, red, jungle green, white, purple.
6. Origin - American, Turkish, African, Asian.
7. Material - Wooden, Metallic, plastic

Examples of Order of Adjectives in Sentences

1. Jackline bought me a new brown American dress.
2. It is a long, narrow plastic brush.
3. She was a beautiful tall young black-haired Scottish woman.
4. She was wearing an amazing red coat.

Please Note: The use of commas to separate adjectives
- Use commas when adjectives are from the same group
Example:
A beautiful, fast insect

- Do not use commas if the adjectives are from different groups
Example:
A fast new red American car is expensive.
