Capacitor Circuit and Observations

Question

The figure below shows a circuit where a battery of 4.5volts, switches A and B, two capacitors C1 = 3µf and C2 = 5µF and a voltmeter, V are connected.
Physics Form 4
a) Determine the amount of charge on C1 when only switch A is closed.
b) Calculate the effective capacitance of the two capacitors.
c) State what would happen on the voltmeter when;
   i) Switch A is closed while switch B remains open.
   ii) Switch A is now opened and switch B
   iii) Explain the observation in (ii) above

Answer

Physics Form 4
c)
i) Voltmeter reading increases from zero to a maximum of 4.5 volts.
ii) Voltmeter reading reduces.
iii) The capacitor C1 discharges to share charge with capacitor C2
