Waterlogged Soils Denitrification

Question

Explain why denitrification occurs mainly in waterlogged soils.

Answer

Denitrification is a microbial process in the nitrogen cycle that involves the conversion of nitrates (NO3-) and nitrites (NO2-) into nitrogen gas (N2) or, in some cases, nitrous oxide (N2O). This process occurs in anaerobic (oxygen-depleted) conditions and is carried out by specialized bacteria known as denitrifiers.

There is oxygen deficiency in waterlogged soils; so microorganisms breakdown soil nitrates into ammonia; (nitrites and nitrogen to obtain oxygen for respiration)
