Effects of Vaseline on Locust Abdomen

Question

A student smeared the abdomen of a locust with Vaseline.
(a) What were the likely results after ten minutes?
(b) Account for the results obtained above
(c) When the locust blood was analysed it was found that the blood does not have blood pigments such as haemoglobin. Explain

Answer

(a) The locust would die (suffocate)
(b) Vaseline blocks the spiracles hindering the exchange of gases; no inhalation
(c) Does not have red blood cells (insects rely on a different respiratory pigment called hemolymph and it doesn't contain hemoglobin).
