The Process of Twisting in Climbing Plants

Question

The figure below shows a stem of a plant growing round a tree trunk
stem of a plant growing round a tree trunk
a) What is the name of the response which causes such a twisted growth?
b) Explain how twisting process is accomplished

Answer

a) Thigmotropism/haptotropism

b) The inner region of the stem, where it touches the tree trunk, contains less auxin compared to the outer part. The higher concentration of auxin on the outer side of the stem, farther from the tree trunk, stimulates faster growth, leading the stem to grow around or coil itself around the tree trunk.
