Test Cross Significance in Genetics

Question

State the significance of test cross in study of genetics.

Answer

The primary purpose of a test cross is to determine the genotype of an organism with a dominant phenotype. By crossing the organism with a homozygous recessive individual (one with a known genotype), researchers can infer the genotype of the dominant phenotype organism based on the phenotypes of their offspring. If all the offspring display the dominant phenotype, the organism being tested is likely homozygous dominant.
