Differences Between Plant and Animal Cell

Question

State the differences between plant cell and animal cell.

Answer

What is a Cell?

A cell is the fundamental and structural unit of life, encompassing all living organisms. It is the smallest independently functioning entity that exhibits the essential characteristics of life, including metabolism, growth, response to stimuli, and reproduction.

Differences Between Animal Cell and plant Cell

1. Cell Wall

Plant cells have a rigid cell wall made of cellulose that surrounds the cell membrane. The cell wall provides structural support and protection. On the other hand, animal cells lack cell walls. Instead, they are surrounded by a flexible cell membrane that gives shape to the cell.

2. Vacuoles

Plant cells typically have a large central vacuole that stores water, nutrients, and waste products. It helps maintain turgor pressure and can occupy a significant portion of the cell's volume. Animal cells rarely have vacuoles; if they do, then they are temporary and small.

3. Shape and Size

Plant cells often have regular shapes due to the rigid cell wall. They are also larger in size compared to animal cells. On the other hand, animal cells have an irregular shape and are smaller in size compared to plant cells.

4. Cell Wall

Green plants' cells contain chloroplasts, which are involved in photosynthesis. Animal cells do not contain chloroplasts.
