How Deletion Occurs During Gene Mutation

During gene mutation (change in the structure of a gene), a deletion can occur when one or more nucleotides are removed from the DNA sequence. This deletion can be caused by errors during DNA replication or exposure to mutagens (a chemical or physical agent capable of inducing changes in DNA called mutations).
Depending on the size and location of the deletion and the gene involved, the effect on the organism can vary, ranging from mild to severe. Deletions in critical genes or regions can lead to genetic disorders or diseases with serious consequences for the individual's health and development such as being born with missing limbs.
