Cell Crenation - Red blood Cell

Question

Explain what would happen to red blood cells if they were placed in a concentrated salt solution.

Answer

When red blood cells are immersed in a concentrated salt solution, water inside the red blood cells will move out through osmosis, causing the red blood cells to undergo shrinkage or shrink in size.

The above process is called crenation.
Crenation occurs when cells lose water and shrivel due to osmotic changes in their environment.
