Allergy Definition

Allergy is a hypersensitive reaction of the body seen in a few individuals towards foreign substances that are normally harmless to the rest of the population. In individuals with allergies, the immune system perceives these otherwise harmless substances, known as allergens, as potential threats. This recognition triggers an exaggerated immune response that results in various symptoms, which can range from mild discomfort to severe and even life-threatening reactions.

The immune system's response involves the release of chemicals, such as histamine, that cause inflammation, itching, sneezing, wheezing, skin rashes, and other allergic symptoms.
