Advantages of Reproduction by Seeds
- Fertilization brings about genetic mixing which leads to the formation of desirable qualities.
- Variants often show hybrid vigor, hence the better competitive ability for resources such as water and nutrients
- Variants are better adapted to environmental conditions.
- Variations normally provide the basis for evolutionary changes
Disadvantages of Reproduction by Seeds
- Some seeds have very low viability.
- Some seeds have long dormancy and may need special treatment in order to germinate.
- Seeds are less likely to survive harsh environmental (soil) conditions;
- Resultant offsprings have slow maturity rate;
- Good parental traits may be lost due to recombination while bad (defective) recessive traits in parents may be expressed in offsprings
