Original Question: Giving relevant examples, explain adaptations of self-dispersed seeds and fruits (explosive mechanism).

What are the Adaptations of Self-dispersed Seeds and Fruits (Explosive Mechanism)?

  1. Occur in dry dehiscent fruits e.g. legumes/ pods. After the pod dries up, the seeds break off from the placenta and are placed inside the pod. Due to the loss of water from the pod and the pressure within the pod, the dividing walls open violently. In the process, seeds are thrown away from the parent plant.
    Examples: Beans, peas, etc.
  2. Some fruits have lines of weakness (sutures) along which the pod opens violently due to the development of pressure from within.
