Original Question: Describe, with the aid of labelled diagram, the structure of a mature carpel and ovule.

Describe the Structure of a Mature Carpel

- The carpel constitutes the female reproductive system of the plant.
- Each carpel consist of three parts namely stigma, style and ovary.
- Each of these parts perform various functions, which include:
  1. The stigma is the extreme top most part of carpel which receives pollen grains during pollination
  2. The style holds the stigma in position and allows passage of the pollen tube through it. It connects the stigma to the ovary
  3. The ovary contains ovules, which develop into seeds
- After fertilization, the ovary of the carpel develops into fruit and ovules into seeds; and stigma and style withers away.
