Alveolus Gas Exchange Surface Characteristics

Question

List the characteristics of the alveolus as a gaseous exchange surface

Answer

Alveoli (Singular: alveolus) are tiny, thin-walled sacs located at the ends of the respiratory bronchioles in the lungs. They are the primary sites of gas exchange in the respiratory system, where oxygen from inhaled air diffuses into the bloodstream, and carbon dioxide, a waste product, diffuses out of the bloodstream into the exhaled air.

The characteristics of the alveolus as an efficient gas exchange surface include:
1. It is thin
2. Its moist
3. It is vascularized/ has a lot of blood capillaries
4. It has a large surface area
