When we have more than one mathematical signs on a problem, we apply the BODMAS rule to solve the problem.
The BODMAS rule is:
The BODMAS rule is:
- B - Bracket
- O - Of
- D - Division
- M - Multiplication
- A - Addition
- S - Subtraction
Example 1:
Work out: 25 + 156 - 72 ÷ 6
Using BODMAS
- Step 1: 72 ÷ 6 = 12
- Hence: 25 + 156 - 12
- Step 2: 25 + 156 = 181
- Hence: 181 - 12 = 169
- Answer is 169
Example 2:
Work out: 12(½ of 32 + 17) ÷ 4 + 10
Using BODMAS
- Step 1: ½ of 32 = 16
- Hence: 12(16 + 17) ÷ 4 + 10
- Step 2: 16 + 17 = 33
- Hence: 12(33) ÷ 4 + 10
- Step 3: 12 X 33 = 396
- Hence: 396 ÷ 4 + 10
- Step 4: 396 ÷ 4 = 99
- Hence: 99 + 10 = 109
- Answer is 109
