Question 1

  1. Outline two areas studied in the practical aspect of geography
  2. Give three importance of studying geography
Answer
  1. - Maps and mapwork
    - Statistical methods
  2. - One is able to explain the origin of the earth and solar system hence acquisition of knowledge.
    - Learners develop skills of observing, reading analysing and interpreting maps, photographs and charts.
    - It encourages international awareness interaction and co-operation.
Question 2

  1. Differentiate between asteroids and meteors
  2. State three characteristics of the sun
Answer
  1. Asteroids are planet like objects that orbit around the sun and between the planets of mars and Jupiter while meteors are small heavenly bodies that enter the atmosphere of theearth from the universe at very fast speed and burn up completely.
  2. - It radiates solar energy which enables life on earth.
    - Comprises of hot gases at very high temperatures.
    - It produces light which other heavenly bodies reflect.
Question 3

The diagram below shows an example of a local wind

  1. Identify the local wind.
  2. Describe how the wind is formed.
Answer
  1. - Katabatic wind
  2. - During the night, hill tops and mountain slopes are cooled faster compared to the valley bottoms by terrestrial radiation.
    - Air at the hill tops and valley slopes become denser, thereby increasing in pressure while the air below the valley is warmer and of low pressure.
    - Air at the valley bottom remain warmer and rises causing low pressure.
    - The cold denser air on the upper slopes flow down by gravity as Katabatic wind
Question 4

  1. State three proofs in support of the continental drift theory
  2. Name two major features resulting from folding.
Answer
  1. - Jig-saw fit of the continents.
    - Ancient glaciations in place such as South of the equator in Africa, India, South America etc.
    - Horizontal displacement of continental rock along faults.
  2. - Rolling plains.
    - Ridges and valley landscape.
Question 5

  1. The diagram below shows a Barchan

    Name:
      (i) The feature marked U
      (ii) The wind marked V
  2. How is a deflation hollow formed?
Answer
  1. (i) U – Gently slope
    (ii) V – Eddy current
  2. - Pre- existing depression localised fault is deepened by eddy action
    - Gradually the depression is excavated through removal of the unconsolidated materials by wind abrasion/ deflation.
    - The depression is deepened then eddy current develop causing more erosion .
