Combined Operations (BODMAS)

When we have more than one mathematical signs on a problem, we apply the BODMAS rule to solve the problem.
The BODMAS rule is:
  • B - Bracket
  • O - Of
  • D - Division
  • M - Multiplication
  • A - Addition
  • S - Subtraction

Example 1:

Work out: 25 + 156 - 72 ÷ 6
Using BODMAS
  • Step 1: 72 ÷ 6 = 12
  • Hence: 25 + 156 - 12
  • Step 2: 25 + 156 = 181
  • Hence: 181 - 12 = 169
  • Answer is 169

Example 2:

Work out: 12(½ of 32 + 17) ÷ 4 + 10
Using BODMAS
  • Step 1: ½ of 32 = 16
  • Hence: 12(16 + 17) ÷ 4 + 10
  • Step 2: 16 + 17 = 33
  • Hence: 12(33) ÷ 4 + 10
  • Step 3: 12 X 33 = 396
  • Hence: 396 ÷ 4 + 10
  • Step 4: 396 ÷ 4 = 99
  • Hence: 99 + 10 = 109
  • Answer is 109
