Social Relations and Cultural Activities

The Family

- It is a group of people who are related by blood, marriage or adoption .
- Its the smallest unit in the society .
- A clan is a group of people related by blood and share a common ancestor.

Types of families

1. Nuclear family - Its made up of father, mother and children.
2. Extended family - Its made up of father, mother, children and relatives.
3. Single parent family -
Its made up of one parent and children due to divorce or death.

Family Needs

Basic/primary needs - Things we cannot live without e.g. food, clothing and shelter.
Secondary needs - Things we require so as to live well e.g. security, education, love and care.

Responsibility of family members

- In the past duties were allocated depending on the age, sex, culture and occupation.
- Girls were taught by their mothers/elderly women and boys by their fathers and elderly men.

Responsibility of parents

  1. Provide basic needs to their family.
  2. Be good role models to their children.
  3. Take care and live with their family.
  4. Provide protection and security to their children.
  5. Provide education and other skills to their children.
  6. Give good advise to their children.

Responsibility of children

  1. Help to take care of family properties eg animals.
  2. Respect and obey their parents/elders.
  3. Assist their parents with family duties.
  4. Behave well in the community.
  5. Preserve positive cultural values.

The Clan System

- A clan is a group of people sharing a common ancestor and are related by blood.
- Ancestors are people who lived long ago.
- Large families form a sub-clan and later a clan.
- A group of clans make an ethnic group (community).
- Mostly clan members are not allowed to marry each other.

Functions of a clan

  1. Protecting its members from external attacks.
  2. Setting rules to guide and control the clan.
  3. Safe guard the values of the clan.
  4. Settling disputes among members.
  5. Allocating land to individual families.
  6. Conducting marriage and initiations.
  7. Educate the youth morals and values.
  8. preserve their cultural belief.

The School

- A school is a place of learning.
- The school motto is a short statement telling the aim and beliefs of a school.
- It is developed by teachers, pupils and parents. It reminds learners to work hard and achieve their goals.

The School Routine

- It's a programme of all the activities planned to take place everyday.
- Importance of school routine include;
  1. It ensures learning takes place smoothly.
  2. It ensures all activities are allocated in time.
  3. It helps in proper use of time.
  4. It ensures smoothing running of the school activities.
  5. It helps instil discipline among pupils and the whole community.
