Democracy and Human Rights

- Democracy is a rule based on the will of people through elections.

Main principles of democracy

  • People have a right to be respected.
  • People need to be treated fairly.
  • People are equal before the law.
  • Power belong to the citizens.
  • People should have equal opportunities.
  • People have a right to belong to a party of their choice.

Types of human rights

- Rights are things we should get or have as human beings.
- Human rights are contained in chapter four of our constitution commonly known as Bill of Rights.
- These are:
  1. Civil and political rights e.g. joining a party of your own will.
  2. Social rights e.g. freedom of worship.
  3. Economic rights e.g. right to work and get a just pay.
  4. Environmental rights e.g. living in a clean and safer environment.

Rights and responsibilities of people

  1. Right to life.
  2. Right to quality education.
  3. Right to privacy.
  4. Right to vote.
  5. Right to own proverties.
  6. Right to vie for leadership.
  7. Right to security.
  8. Right to employment.
  9. Right to marry.

Abuse of human rights

  1. Wrongful arrest- This is when you are wrongly arrested and mistreated.
  2. - Suspects should be taken to court within 24 hrs.
    - Police are not supposed to beat any suspect.
  3. Mob justice.
  4. Discrimination and favouritism.

Rights and responsibilities of persons with special needs

- These are people who have difficulties in some parts of their body functioning such as;
  1. Visually impaired.
  2. Physically challenged.
  3. Aged.
  4. Refugees.
  5. Those with hearing impairment.
Rights of persons with special needs
  • The right to be educated through Braille.
  • The right to be treated fairly and respected.
  • The right to gainful employment.
  • The right to basic needs, transport and information.
  • The right tot provision of hearing aids.
  • The right to be adopted - orphaned children.
Responsibilities of persons with special needs
  1. To accept themselves the way they are.
  2. Should not abuse the privileges given.
  3. Should be law-abiding citizens.
  4. Should participate in community duties.
  5. Should work hard to better their lives through training.
